Finland 2024 ESS Summer School, 29 July -1 August, Friendshipp Inn, Kruusila

Join us for a unique European Shakuhachi Society summer school in Finland this summer!

The European Shakuhachi Society is very excited to announce its collaboration with the Finnish Shakuhachi Association to present to you ESS Summer School Finland 2024, taking place 29.7–1.8 .

We are specially grateful to be able to welcome from Japan our special guest Tani Yasunori (谷保範), Iemoto daihyō dai-shihan of Ueda-ryū and member of JSPN (The Japan Shakuhachi Professional-players Network). This is the first time we have a major Ueda-ryū player as teacher and we acknowledge the support of the Scandinavia-Japan Sasakawa Foundation to make that possible. We will announce a more detailed schedule in the coming weeks.

ESS commission by Marty Regan

The ESS is thrilled to announce a special commission for this year’s Summer School in Finland: We asked world renowned composer Marty Regan to create a special ‘group piece’ for Finland 2024 which will have its World Premiere in the Sibelius Museum in Turku. This ‘group piece’ will be performed by teachers and participants of the Summer School and welcomes players of all levels too.

Marty Regan will be there to oversee rehearsals and the premiere. The concert in Turku is on the third evening of the Summer School so there is time to rehearse for everyone who will participate.

He will also present a talk as well as, being the main organiser of the World Shakuhachi Festival in Texas in 2025, presenting more details about the major shakuhachi event coming up next April.

Registration and booking

As always we offer early bird tickets for anyone who registers before 12 May 2024, and offer a range of options, with or without accommodation / food etc. We accept secure payment via PayPal in all currencies, for more details on participation fees go to our pricing page.

The Finnish Shakuhachi Association

This Summer School would not be possible without the huge enthusiasm and support of the Finnish Shakuhachi Association. They secured funding from the Scandinavia-Japan Sasakawa Foundation for Tani Yasunori as well as are coordinating the logistics on the ground.
